  • Josep Jornet is 2022 IEEE WTC Outstanding Young Researcher

    “Associate Professor Josep Jornet received the 2022 IEEE WTC Outstanding Young Researcher Award for his pioneering contributions to the field of terahertz communications. Jornet’s contributions range from terahertz array architectures and propagation channel models to physical and link layer solutions for ultra-broadband and ultra-directional networks operating at frequencies above 100 GHz. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and multiple patents.”

  • Therese Pirozzi receives grant for ‘Active Brain, Healthy Brain Exercise Program’

    “Therese Pirozzi, associate professor in Bouvé College’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, is a practicing speech-language pathologist with a focus on language and health literacy of low-income families, neuroplasticity of the brain, and the effects of brain injury on survivors and their families. Over the summer, she received a grant for the ‘Active Brain, Healthy Brain Exercise Program’ from the Community Endowment of Lexington—an endowed fund of the Foundation for MetroWest.”

  • Linker wins Ticknor Society Prize for book collecting

    Jessica Linker, assistant professor of history, won the 2022 Ticknor Society Prize for book collecting, which was announced at the Boston Antiquarian Book Fair in November, 2022. Her entry, “Emma Hart Willard: A Life in Print,” examines the nineteenth-century founder of Troy Female Seminary, Emma Hart Willard.

  • Yongmin Liu elected 2023 Fellow Member of Optica for research in nanophotonics

    “Associate Professor Yongmin Liu was elected as a 2023 Fellow Member of Optica. Fellow membership in Optica is limited to no more than ten percent of the membership and is reserved for members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics. Liu is being honored specifically for significant contributions to the fundamental and application of nanophotonics, particularly plasmonics and photonic metamaterials.”

  • Northeastern researchers win ‘Invented Here!’ contest

    “This year, the Center for Research Innovation is excited to share that multiple Northeastern researchers have been honored in the annual Invented Here! contest, held by the Boston Patent Law Association (BPLA). Established in 2010 by the BPLA, the Invented Here! contest is meant to celebrate local New England inventors, from their inventions to their own stories. Over 49 inventions and over 170 inventors have been recognized since 2010. These inventors are key to furthering innovation not only in our region, but across the world.”

  • Fazelpour becomes Schmidt Futures Early Career Fellow to ‘pursue bold and multidisciplinary research in artificial intelligence’

    The philanthropic Schmidt Futures organization “announced the first cohort of fifteen AI2050 Early Career Fellows who will pursue bold and multidisciplinary research in artificial intelligence (AI) at ten universities and one national laboratory.” Assistant professor of philosophy and computer science Sina Fazelpour has been named one of these fellows. “Fellows are eligible to receive up to $300,000 over two years and will have access to Schmidt Futures’ network of global talent to advance their AI research in fields including computer science, economics, political science, and philosophy,” Schmidt Futures wrote.

  • Nusbaum receives 2022 AESA Critics’ Choice Book Award

    Emily Nusbaum and Jessica Nina Lester (Indiana University) have won the American Educational Studies Association 2022 award for their recent co-edited book, “Centering Diverse Bodyminds in Critical Qualitative Inquiry.” The editors approach “disability embodiment and the lived experience of disability [as] potential sources of method and methodological advancement.”

  • Aguilera elected as fellow in the Academy of Management

    “Ruth V. Aguilera, the Darla and Frederick Brodsky Trustee professor in global business … was recently elected as an Academy of Management (AOM) fellow. … Fellowship is an honor bestowed to members for outstanding service to the discipline who have significantly advanced the fields of management and practice. Since Aguilera is also a fellow of both the Strategic Management Society (SMS) and the Academy of International Business (AIB), she has earned entrance into what she calls the ‘Triple Crown’—an exclusive group of professionals who have made a mark in the domains of strategy, international business, and management.”

  • Health sciences faculty receive Physician Assistant Education Association awards

    Carey Barry, chair of the department of medical sciences and program director for the Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences physician assistant program, earned the Rising Star Award from the Physician Assistant Education Association. From the same society, Trenton Honda, associate dean and clinical professor at the Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences, received the Article of the Year Award for “Maximizing Black applicant matriculation in U.S. PA programs: associations between the number of submitted applications and likelihood of matriculation.”

  • Professor Steven Lopez wins I-APS Award for Young Investigators

    Professor Steven Lopez was awarded the Inter-American Photochemical Society (I-APS) Award for Young Investigators, which “recognizes outstanding photoscientific contributions by Society members who have held an independent research position for no more than five years at the time of application.”

  • Professor Steven Lopez wins £12,000 grant for photodynamics research

    Professor Steven Lopez and his collaborator at Queen Mary University, London, have won a grant of £12,000 to support faculty and student exchanges. This will enhance their collaborative efforts to develop code to understand excited-state photodynamics in molecular crystals. This award is sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry International Exchanges 2022 program.

  • Hoff receives Exceptional Service Award in the Academy of Management

    “D’Amore-McKim School of Business Professor of Management Timothy Hoff was recently named the 2022 Myron D. Fottler Exceptional Service Award winner—the most distinguished honor bestowed by the Health Care Management (HCM) Division within the Academy of Management (AOM). It is reserved for individuals who have dedicated at least 10 years to the organization and profession and have an illustrious career that focuses on mentoring, professional leadership and extensive research in the healthcare field.”

  • Passas awarded $500,000 grant from National Science Foundation for counterfeit medicine research

    Nikos Passas, professor of criminology and criminal justice and co-director of the Institute for Security and Public Policy, was recently awarded a grant worth $500,000 for a research project titled “Financial and Network Disruptions in Counterfeit and Illegal Medicines Trade.” From the abstract, the project’s goal “is to develop and evaluate a network-enabled system that will identify points of intervention and coordinate stakeholders’ efforts to disrupt illicit flows of medical products.” Read the full abstract and find out more about the award at the NSF.
