November is chock-full of can’t-miss campus events, programs, and guest speakers, including Homecoming, Global Entrepreneurship Week, and Top Chef judge Gail Simmons.

Flash talks

The Global Resilience Institute will host a series of 4-minute flash talks by more than a dozen Northeastern researchers on Monday, Nov. 6 at noon in the Alumni Center. The two-hour event will focus on faculty members who are working to strengthen community resilience, and their presentations will cover everything from data literacy to the political efficacy of communities.

Homecoming

Homecoming will be held Nov. 5-12. The program will include more than 20 events, covering everything from sports and food to music and community service. Watch your peers put their skills to the test at “Northeastern’s Got Talent” on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at Afterhours. Show off your smarts at the 7th annual Homecoming Trivia Night on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at Afterhours. And flaunt your Husky spirit by wearing red and black on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

James Cordon, the host of the Late Late Show, will headline the festivities, taking part in a chat hosted by actress Amanda Seales on Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Matthews Arena. Tickets, which went on sale in late-October, are still available through the myNEU portal.

Housing policy

The third and final installment of the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs’ Lives in Law and Policy Speaker Series will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at noon in the Cabral Center. Richard Rothstein, a leading authority on housing policy, will discuss his new book The Color of Law, in which he argues that the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

Myra Kraft Open Classroom

What will Boston look like in 2030? That’s the focus of this semester’s Open Classroom series, which meets on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. in 20 West Village F. The next event in the series—titled “Building Ladders of Opportunity at Boston Public Schools”—will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 8, when Rahn Dorsey, Boston’s chief of education, will discuss universal pre-K.

Xhibition Kitchen

Northeastern Dining’s Food Network-​​​​style series fea­tures cooking demon­stra­tions in Xhi­bi­tion Kitchen, which is located in the Stetson West Eatery. November’s slate of events will feature three more demonstrations by some of the food world’s most beloved figures: Seth Gerber and Douglass Williams of MIDA, an Italian restaurant in Boston’s South End neighborhood (Nov. 8), Top Chef judge Gail Simmons (Nov. 16), and cookbook author Robyn Eckhardt (Nov. 29).

Security and resilience

This fall’s four-part Contemporary Issues in Security and Resilience Studies speaker series is in full swing, with two more events to look forward to this semester. Laura Kuhl, assistant professor at Northeastern, will deliver the next lecture on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in 909 Renaissance Park, where she will give a talk titled “Innovative Systems for Climate Adaptation and Resilience.”

Veterans Day Ceremony

Northeastern’s annual Veterans Day ceremony will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial. The event will feature remarks by Lt. Gen. Scott Rice, director of the U.S. Air National Guard.

Want to write a novel?

The Department of English will host a weeklong series of readings, talks, and workshops with Visiting Distinguished Writer Paul Murray from Monday, Nov. 13 to Thursday, Nov. 16. As part of the program, Murray will host a workshop titled “How do I start my novel?” on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at noon in the Raytheon Amphitheater. His latest novel, The Mark and the Void, was one of Time‘s top 10 best fiction books of 2015.

Global Entrepreneurship Week

Global Entrepreneurship Week—the largest celebration of innovators and entrepreneurs in the world—will run from Nov. 13 to Nov. 17. At Northeastern, GEW will feature a series of interactive events hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship Education and the Office of Alumni Relations. Some of the events will be held on campus, while others will take place online.

Here’s a rundown of events:

  • The Husky Startup Challenge will host its annual Demo Day on Monday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Ballroom.
  • Amin Khoury, MBA’89, the founder of B/E Aerospace, will receive Northeastern’s inaugural Distinguished Entrepreneur Award and then deliver a speech on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 6:15 p.m. in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex.
  • Greg Skloot, DMSB’12, will host a webinar designed to help Northeastern entrepreneurs improve their startups’ marketing strategies on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at noon.
  • Northeastern entrepreneurs will showcase their startups and their big ideas at NEXPO, the university’s entrepreneurship expo, on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in ISEC.

Human rights transformed

The School of Law will host an all-day symposium titled “International Law, Local Justice: Human Rights Transformed” on Friday, Nov. 17 in 240 Dockser Hall. The event—which will run from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.—will be held in honor of former Northeastern professor Hope Lewis who died last year and to commemorate the launch of the law school’s new Center for Public Interest Advocacy and Collaboration.

‘Media, polarization, and the 2016 election’

Matthew Gentzkow, economics professor at Stanford University, will deliver a talk titled “Media, Polarization, and the 2016 Election” on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. in 333 Curry Student Center.

Athletics

Men’s hockey will play six games in November, including three at Matthews Arena. The Huskies’ next home game will be held on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7p.m., marking the back end of a home-and-home series against crosstown rival Boston University.

Women’s hockey will be even busier in November, playing eight games throughout the month. Three of them—Friday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m.—will be played at home. The Nov. 10 game will mark the front-end of a home-and-home series against Hockey East rival Merrimack.

Men’s basketball will open the 2017-18 season on Friday, Nov. 10 at crosstown rival Boston University. The Huskies will play their home opener on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. at Matthews Arena against Wentworth. The first 750 fans will receive a commemorative rally towel emblazoned with the new design of the Matthews Arena court. The team will also host Harvard on Thursday, Nov. 30.

Women’s basketball will play three home games at Cabot Center in November: Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. against Providence; Friday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. against Fairfield; and Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. against Marist.
