Let’s kick off the season

Three Northeastern varsity teams open their regular seasons Friday, including the lone home game of the day when men’s soccer takes on regional rival the University of New Hampshire at Parsons Field at 6 p.m.

Men’s soccer looks to win its fourth straight home opener, as the Huskies face UNH for the first time since 2006. Seniors Jacob Aduama and Simon Cox, along with redshirt senior Ambry Moss, will lead the Huskies as tri-captains for this season. Northeastern is coming off a 6-9-3 season in 2013, a year that saw the Huskies finish fifth in the CAA standings with a record of 3-3-1. For more information about the team, check out GoNU’s preview.

Admission is free, and the game is part of Northeastern’s Welcome Week 2014 festivities. Buses will depart every 15 minutes from Chicken Lou’s on Forsyth Street beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday. The International Student and Scholar Institute will be hosting a tailgate party at the game. The ISSI will hand out tickets to the tailgate on a first come, first serve basis on the shuttle buses.

Out of state, the field hockey team opens play Friday night, traveling to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for the Conference Cup at The Nook to take on Temple University at 7 p.m. The game marks the first regular season meeting between the teams since 1991. Conference Cup play for the Huskies continues Sunday afternoon against No. 1 ranked University of Maryland. Northeastern’s home opener is Sept. 5 against Providence at Dedham Field.

The volleyball team also opens its season with tournament play. The Huskies, celebrating their 10th season in the Colonial Athletic Association, will take on a trio of opponents this weekend at the 2014 Radisson-UCF Invitational in Orlando, Florida. First up is Eastern Kentucky (Friday 10 a.m.), then Florida International (Friday 5 p.m.), and finally Central Florida (Saturday 1 p.m.). Volleyball serves up its home opener on Friday, Sept. 19 against Boston College in the Cabot Center.

Also on tap for this weekend: The men’s and women’s cross country teams will open their seasons with the KSC Alumni Invitational in Keene, New Hampshire. Racing is slated to get underway at 11 a.m.

The women’s soccer team has already kicked off the 2014 campaign. The Huskies (1-1-1) played Providence to a 0-0 draw Thursday night, and on Sunday they will take on UNH at 1 p.m. at Parsons Field.
