  • LL Cool J is a Doctor now, thanks to Northeastern

    BostInno - 05/04/2014

LL Cool J received an honorary degree Friday from Northeastern University. The “trailblazing performing artist, devoted mentor … [and] cultural icon” was named “Doctor” in front of roughly 20,000 faculty, staff, family members and students — the most important being his daughter Italia Smith, who graduated from Northeastern with honors.

Also presented with honorary degrees were: former NFL player Wade Davis II, the executive director of the You Can Play Project, an organization dedicated to ending discrimination, sexism and homophobia in sports; and former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, the current president of the University of California.

Napolitano delivered Friday’s commencement address, telling students, “You don’t go to college so you can punch a clock. You go to college so that you can be in a position to make a difference.”
