“As a result, you had these companies coming in and bestowing upon these young talents this check to enable them to create recordings that the label could then make money with,” says David Herlihy, an entertainment attorney and music industry professor at Northeastern University. “And so the labels owned the recordings.”

What they’re saying: San Jose’s pilot is part of a broader trend of local governments testing “really, really narrow use cases where tech can actually free up time,” Kimberly Lucas, public policy professor at Northeastern University, told Axios.

The company partnered with Northeastern University on this research – surveying 22 faculty members about how and why they use Claude. In their survey responses, university faculty said grading student work was the task the chatbot was least effective at.

The findings call into question Meta’s efforts “to protect teens from the worst parts of the platform”, says Laura Edelson, a professor at Northeastern University who oversaw a review of the findings. “Using realistic testing scenarios, we can see that many of Instagram’s safety tools simply are not working.”
