Women’s hockey team begins quest for fourth consecutive Beanpot title Tuesday night
Northeastern hockey teams gear up for the Beanpot — women will defend their streak, men will aim to reclaim the title.

Beanpot season is here.
The Northeastern University women’s hockey team will be looking to defend its Beanpot title when it takes on Boston University at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walter Brown Arena on the BU campus.
“The key for us is going to be execution consistency, taking advantage of opportunities that we create and playing well defensively,” said Dave Flint, Northeastern’s women’s hockey coach. “We got to compete for 60 minutes [on Tuesday], and if we can do that, then I like our chances.”
The women’s team won its third consecutive Beanpot last year with a 4-0 victory over BU in front of 13,279 fans at TD Garden, the largest crowd to watch a women’s hockey game in New England — breaking the record of 10,633 set the year before — and the fifth-largest in women’s college hockey history.
The 47th Dunkin’ Women’s Beanpot Championship will be played at TD Garden on Jan. 20. The third-place game will start at 4:30 p.m., followed by the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
The 73rd Annual Dunkin’ Men’s Beanpot will also take place at TD Garden on the first two Mondays in February. The semifinals are scheduled for Feb. 2, with both the third-place and championship games on Feb. 9.
“We’re building every day to get our group to consistently bring our identity as we move into the second half of the season and toward Beanpot time,” said Jerry Keefe, Fernie Flaman head men’s hockey coach. “When we play our winning brand of hockey, we have a lot of confidence in each other and in our team’s success.”
The annual Beanpot is a two-round college ice hockey tournament, as unique to Boston as the Boston Marathon and the Head of the Charles rowing competition. It features four Boston-area schools — Northeastern, Boston College, Boston University and Harvard — battling for the bragging rights as the best ice hockey team in town.
While the Northeastern women’s team looks to defend its Beanpot title, the men’s team will be looking to restore its championship status. Two individual awards will be presented: the Eberly Trophy for the outstanding goaltender and the Tournament MVP award.
