Explore engineering co-ops around the world. Learn about the Cold War while taking a tour of “Nuclear Colorado.” Put the Afghanistan evacuation into historical context. These are just some of the campus events on offer in September.

First Pages

Northeastern will hold its First Pages—an annual event for incoming students—with featured speaker Yaa Gyasi, speaking about her novel Transcendent Kingdom, required reading for all incoming first-year students. This virtual event will take place Sept. 8, 8 p.m. EDT.

The College of Engineering is offering advice on how to discover and pursue co-ops around the world, including search techniques, information on logistics, and tips for self-developing positions. For anyone planning to do an engineering co-op in Spring/Summer 2022, attendance is required at one of these sessions: Thursday, Sept. 9, at 12 p.m. EDT; Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 5 p.m. EDT; or Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. EDT.

The National GEM Consortium increases participation by underrepresented groups at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science. At the GEM Annual Conference, to be held Sept. 9-11 in Houston, university and employer representatives will be exhibiting their graduate and undergraduate research programs.

Help launch a digital public humanities project

The project, “A People’s Atlas of Nuclear Colorado,” is co-edited and co-moderated by Sarah Kanouse, associate professor at Northeastern. It draws from a wide array of sources to document and interpret nuclear geographies and legacies of the Cold War. Begin with a class on sustainability, resilience, and climate change

These weekly open seminars are also available as a pop-up, for-credit course (INPR 2183). Starting on Sept. 14, sessions will take place every Tuesday at 5 p.m. EDT, either online or in-person at 305 Shillman Hall. Future topics will include energy resilience, climate justice, and sustainable food systems.

Dominic Tierney, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, discusses the failures and stalemates endured by the U.S. military in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Tierney’s most recent book is The Right Way to Lose a War: America in an Age of Unwinnable Conflicts (Little, Brown, & Co., 2015).
