For students, a ‘Welcome’ return to campus

Fall semester classes are still a week away, but campus is already bustling with activity, as thousands of students from across the United States and around the globe have begun arriving on Northeastern’s campus.

Dozens of Welcome Week activities are scheduled for full-time undergraduate students, including mandatory events and specific programming for incoming freshmen and students in particular colleges.

Here’s a rundown of some of the biggest activities happening over the next week:

Trash2Treasure Sale: Deck out your dorm room or apartment with gently used items — otherwise destined for a trip down the garbage chute. These items, like mirrors, bed risers and storage units, were collected during move-out by the Husky Energy Action Team for this yard sale-style event. Students looking to volunteer at the sale can register online.
Sunday, Sept. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Curry Student Center ballroom

Men’s Soccer vs. Harvard: Root for the Huskies in a match against the Harvard Crimson at Parsons Field. Enjoy an athletics-sponsored barbecue and mingle with Northeastern athletes, coaches and administrators.
Sunday, Sept. 2. Game starts at 2 p.m., with buses leaving from outside Chicken Lou’s on Forsyth Street at 12:30 p.m.

Xplosaic — Exploring the Cultural Mosaic of Our Community: This carnival event is organized by Northeastern’s cultural centers — the Asian American Center, the International Student and Scholar Institute, the John D. O’Bryant African-American Institute, the Latino/a Student Cultural Center and the Spiritual Life Center — and features international games, prizes, art, food, music, performances and more.
Monday, Sept. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. on Centennial Common (rain location: Cabot Physical Education Center).

President’s Convocation: President Joseph E. Aoun formally welcomes students to campus in the traditional convocation ceremony. Those attending this event, mandatory for new students, are asked to wear their particular college’s t-shirt.
Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 9:45 a.m. in Matthews Arena. Immediately following Convocation is the New Student Welcome Barbecue on Centennial Common (rain location is Cabot Physical Education Center).

Fall Activities Fair: Explore the many unique opportunities to get involved on campus. At this fair, students can meet representatives from many of Northeastern’s more than 300 student organizations.
Thursday, Sept. 6, from 3 to 5 p.m., Centennial Common (rain date Monday, Sept. 10)
