WeekendWatch: The return of basketball, and Veterans Day

Northeastern Athletics.

It’s a three-day weekend, with no class this Friday to mark Veterans Day, our nation’s annual day to honor the service of men and women in America’s military. It’s also a full weekend of activities, on campus and across the city.

Honoring our veterans: Northeastern hosts its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at the Veterans Memorial in Neal F. Finnegan Plaza, located adjacent to the Egan Research Center. The event features a keynote address by General David D. McKiernan, the retired former commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

Super Bass: Zach Brown, a 21-year-old bass player from the Washington, D.C. area, is playing a concert at 7 p.m. Thursday night at the Museum of Fine Arts. The event is free with the cost of admission to the museum (which itself offers free admission to Northeastern undergrads with a student ID). The concert of the Zach Brown Project will be held in Gallery 168 of the museum’s new Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art.

Husky hoops: The men’s and women’s basketball teams kick of their seasons this weekend, with the women playing Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. and the men playing away at Boston University at 5 p.m. Cheer for the Huskies this weekend, hopefully the start of a great season for both squads.

Move your rear: To raise money and awareness for colon cancer research, the Colon Cancer Coalition is hosting its annual Get Your Rear In Gear 5K at Castle Island in South Boston. Online registration is closed, but registration will be open at pre-packet pickup on Friday and on race morning at Castle Island, starting at 7:30 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m.
