Carson Beach, South Boston
How to get there: Red Line to JFK/UMass stop, then a short walk down William J. Day Boulevard.
Why go: The waves may not be huge, but you can’t beat the proximity to the city and the opportunities for people watching.

Spectacle Island, Boston Harbor Islands
How to get there: Blue Line to Aquarium stop, then a Boston Harbor Islands ferry from Long Wharf for a $14 round-trip.
Why go: One of the Boston’s best-kept secrets. Built mostly on fill left over from the Big Dig, Spectacle boasts a beautiful beach, pristine water and hiking trails that offer an amazing view of Boston Harbor.

Revere Beach, Revere
How to get there: Blue Line to the Revere Beach or Wonderland stops.
Why go: The oldest public beach in the United States — founded two years before Northeastern, in 1896 — Revere Beach draws a diverse crowd from Boston and the North Shore suburbs.

Singing Beach, Manchester-by-the-Sea
How to get there: Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line to Manchester, then a 15-minute walk down Beach Street.
Why go: Located off the beaten path, this quiet North Shore beach got its name from its distinct sand, which produces a squeaky sound as you drag your bare feet through it.

Winthrop Shores Reservation, Winthrop
How to get there: Blue Line to the Orient Heights stop, then the Paul Revere Bus service to Winthrop Beach.
Why go:  This beach, just north of the city, tends not to draw huge crowds, providing a quiet spot for an afternoon of sun and surf.
