Huskies get new women’s soccer coach

Tracey Leone—whose achievements include two world titles as a coach and three national championships as a player—is the new head coach of the Northeastern women’s soccer team.

Leone spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Harvard, where she helped lead the Crimson to back-to-back Ivy League championships in 2008 and 2009.

“To say that we are thrilled to welcome a coach and person the quality of Tracey would be an understatement,” said Northeastern athletics director Peter Roby. “Tracey brings world class qualifications to our women’s soccer program and to Northeastern. We are excited for her and for our student-athletes.”

As the founding head coach of Clemson’s women’s soccer program, starting in 1993, she led the Tigers to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. She served as an assistant coach to the gold-medal winning U.S. women’s soccer national team during the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, and won a world championship in 2002 as the head coach for the United States Soccer Federation Under-19 women’s national team.

As a midfielder for the University of North Carolina in the mid-1980s, Leone helped the Tar Heels win three national championships, playing for legendary head coach Anson Dorrance.

Leone takes over a Huskies team that has enjoyed success over the past two seasons. In 2008, the Huskies won the Colonial Athletic Association conference championship, and won a first-round game in the NCAA Tournament. Last year, Northeastern won the regular season conference championship, compiling a 7-1-3 conference record.
