Welcoming the 112th Class

Northeastern University welcomes more than 2,800 new undergraduates to campus this week. The 112th entering class is among the university’s most accomplished, and also its most diverse.

“Northeastern welcomes these students to a university with a distinctive approach to learning and a deep commitment to educating the next generation of leaders,” said President Joseph Aoun. “This week, they join a community of students, faculty and alumni dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and solving society’s greatest problems.”

The new class includes approximately 40 National Merit and National Achievement scholars; half graduated within the top 10 percent of their high school class. The mean score for entering freshmen on the two-part SAT was 1285, up 55 points since 2006, and the middle 50 percent had an average high-school GPA of 3.7.

In terms of diversity, the entering freshmen represent 1,608 high schools around the world. Just under a third of the class are students of color, and nearly 10 percent are international students, hailing from 72 countries. Among the entering freshmen from the United States, nearly half—48 percent—are from outside the six New England states.
