Oral history project captures the "Voices of Northeastern"

Recollections and reflections from alumni, faculty and friends will become a permanent piece of the University’s historical record as part of a new oral history project, “The Voices of Northeastern.”

The project celebrates the strong sense of tradition and pride in University history that many alumni and friends articulated was important to them during the “One Campaign,” a university-wide engagement effort that reached 2,500 members of the Northeastern family in March 2009.

“At Northeastern, each generation builds upon the success of the last. We have a responsibility to preserve great traditions and capture individual perspectives in a way future generations can learn from and build upon,” said Joseph E. Aoun, president of Northeastern University. “Many students come to attend Northeastern because they have been inspired by one of our graduates. That is one of many reasons why preserving oral histories, and celebrating the successes and impact of our alumni, is so important.”

The Voices of Northeastern is a Web-based project that captures voices of people who have been a part of the Northeastern community and whose contributions have advanced the institution through the decades.

“Our conversations during the One Campaign underscored that everyone who has spent time at Northeastern has shaped our institution in some way. Each person has a special story to tell,” said Diane MacGillivray, senior vice president for university advancement. “Alumni are finding this to be an exciting way to recall and reconnect with some of their most meaningful Northeastern memories.”

On the Web site, participants share unique perspectives about co-op, remember what campus life was like in certain time periods and recall those programs, professors and courses that most influenced their lives, and continue to inspire their philanthropy. Visitors to the site can listen to these memories by clicking on various audio clips. Complete interview transcripts will be held in perpetuity within the Northeastern University Archives and Special Collections.
