Drug Free Schools and Communities Act

To all members of the Northeastern community:

Northeastern University strives to maintain a working, living, and learning environment that is free from the negative effects that alcohol and other drug use can create. The University adheres to and complies with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989, which require an Institution of Higher Education to adopt and implement programs to prevent the illicit use of drugs and the abuse of alcohol by students and its employees.

In compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, this serves as Northeastern University’s annual notice that the unauthorized purchase, manufacture, distribution, possession, sale, storage or use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or controlled substances, while in or on premises or property owned or controlled by the University is prohibited.

Included within this annual notice is:

1. The University’s standards of conduct that clearly prohibit, at a minimum, the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol on school property or as part of any school activities.
2. A description of the applicable legal sanctions under federal or state law for the unlawful possession or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol .
3. A description of the health risks associated with the use of illicit drugs and the abuse of alcohol.
4. A description of any drug or alcohol counseling, treatment, rehabilitation, and re-entry programs that are available to employees or students.
5. A clear statement that the institution will impose disciplinary sanctions on students and employees, and a description of those sanctions, up to and including expulsion or termination of employment and referral for prosecution, for violations of the standards of conduct.

All students and employees must be aware of the information contained in this notice and understand that the University is seriously committed to maintaining a drug-free campus.
