    ‘We have to treat everybody as though they have it’


    Many Northeastern students in healthcare have been working at Boston-area hospitals throughout the pandemic. Here are some of their stories.

    They chose to stay and fight


    At a time when many of us are being advised to keep our distance, dozens of Northeastern nursing students are serving co-ops at Boston hospitals during the public health crisis. Here are three of their stories.

    The patients are digital. The nursing students are real.


    Nursing students had a problem: They needed experiential learning hours, but hospitals couldn’t take on students because of COVID-19. An app created by Northeastern graduate Mike McLinn simulates patient care so that students can stay on track despite the pandemic.

    Nurses are taking care of COVID-19 patients. Who’s taking care of the nurses?


    Nurses often put their own health on the back burner to care for others, says Maria van Pelt, dean of the School of Nursing. But caring for COVID-19 patients could put them at greater risk for post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and increased substance use disorder, she says.

    Northeastern senior Julianne Mayville lifts weights six times a week, drinks two gallons of water daily, and weighs her food on a scale. There turned out to be more to competitive bodybuilding than she ever imagined.

    A simple fix that could save lives in the intensive care unit


    Intravenous smart pumps, which infuse medications into a patient’s bloodstream at a set rate, have helped reduce the number of errors in the intensive care unit. But nurses still need to set up the system and enter the correct dosage information for each medication. Karen Giuliano, an associate professor in Northeastern’s school of nursing, has come up with a device that will cut down on the potential for errors.

    Lilia Bacu’s mother told her, ‘Listen to your heart.’ Now Bacu does voluntary cardiac care in Rwanda


    Bacu, a Northeastern alumna and part-time lecturer in the School of Nursing, has been volunteering practical knowledge in cardiology in Rwanda for three years, with no end in sight. “We’re helping people have another chance at life,” she says. “That’s a personal commitment.”
