Some fall semester events you won’t want to miss

The fall semester is chock-full of exciting events sure to pique your curiosity, stimulate your intellect, and whet your taste buds. From cooking demonstrations and pumpkin carving to free shopping sprees and lectures on topics like the future of warfare, here are some of the must-see campus events happening over the next few months.

Myra Kraft Open Classroom

What will Boston look like in 2030? That’s the focus of this semester’s Open Classroom series, which will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. in 20 West Village F until Dec. 13. The seminar series, which is run by the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, is free and open to the public and the Northeastern community.

Sustainability

Stop by this year’s Sustainability, Bike, and Light Fair for everything from free food to bike repair training. The event will also include discounted LED lights for sale, and representatives from the Boston Cyclists’ Union, MassRides, and other groups will be on hand to chat. The fair will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. on the Snell Library Quad. In case of inclement weather, it will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the same time and place.

Social justice

Perhaps best known for her viral YouTube videos, including “Sh*t White Girls Say to Black Girls,” Franchesca Ramsey will deliver a lecture titled, “Seeing color: Exploring whiteness in a racialized world,” on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Ballroom.

Husky Closet

Don’t miss the chance to build your professional wardrobe for free on Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the John D. O’Bryant African American Institute. Receive resume-building tips, practice your elevator pitch, and network with employers while shopping for one free professional outfit in preparation for the fall Career Fair. Xhibition Kitchen

Northeastern Dining’s Food Network-​​​​style series fea­tures cooking demon­stra­tions in Xhi­bi­tion Kitchen, which is located in the Stetson West Eatery. This semester’s slate will feature more than a dozen demonstrations by some of the food world’s most beloved figures, including Top Chef judge Gail Simmons and wine and cheese educator Adam Centamore. Chef and author Joanne Chang will host the next event, which will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at noon.

Arts

Tim Miller, an internationally acclaimed artist and pioneer in the field of autobiographic performance, will join the Department of Theatre and the Center for the Arts for a weeklong residency this month. On Thursday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. in the Ryder Hall Theatre Lab, catch his solo performance of “Rooted,” a piece that shares stories of family trees and the hidden LGBT histories among them. Then, on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 8 p.m. in the Fenway Center, Northeastern students will perform “Body Maps,” a piece that Miller and students are currently working on.

Global co-op

The Global Co-op Networking Fair will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad. The fair will give students the chance to ask questions of other students who have done a global co-op, with a particular focus on how to prepare for living abroad, what happens on the ground, and the personal and academic rewards associated with these experiential learning opportunities.

Fall Career Fair

The Fall Career Fair will be held on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Cabot Cage. More than 260 employers will be on hand looking to hire undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students for internships, co-ops, and full time jobs.

Security and resilience

This fall’s four-part Contemporary Issues in Security and Resilience Studies speaker series is in full swing, with three more events to look forward to this semester. Heather Roff, of the University of Oxford, will deliver the next lecture on Oct. 10 at 4:30 p.m. in 909 Renaissance Park, giving a talk titled “The Future of Warfare.”

Open house

As part of the 50-year anniversary celebration of the founding of the Marine Science Center, the MSC will host an open house on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free, family-friendly event will give attendees the opportunity to interact with MSC students, faculty, and staff while taking tours, participating in guided tide pooling, observing autonomous underwater robots in action, and more. In the event of inclement weather, the open house will be moved to Saturday, Oct. 21.

Pumpkin carving

Northeastern’s 17th annual pumpkin carving contest will take place on Thursday, Oct. 26 in the Levine Marketplace. Stay tuned for more details—and be sure to use #pumpkiNU to show off your cool creations when the time comes.

Pumpkins from the carving contest will be on display on Friday, Oct. 27 in the Xhibition Kitchen, where students, faculty, and staff will have the opportunity to vote for their favorites. You’ll also be able to vote all weekend long via FacebookInstagram, and Twitter. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Homecoming

Homecoming will be held from Nov. 5 to Nov. 11. And while the event schedule is still in the works, you can follow @homecomingnu on Twitter and  @homecomingnortheastern on Instagram to get the latest news and updates.

Global Entrepreneurship Week

Global Entrepreneurship Week—the largest celebration of innovators and entrepreneurs in the world—will run from Nov. 13 to Nov. 17. At Northeastern, GEW will feature a series of soon-to-be revealed interactive events hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship Education and the Office of Alumni Relations. Some of the events will be held on campus, while others will take place online.

Athletics

The men’s hockey team will officially drop the puck on the 2017-18 season on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Matthews Arena, where the Huskies will take on Prince Edward Island in an exhibition game. The regular season will begin a week later, with back-to-back home games against against Sacred Heart on Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7. Other notable matchups include home-and-home series’ against two Hockey East rivals—UMass-Lowell on Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28 and Boston University, on Saturday, Nov. 4 and Friday, Nov. 10.

The women’s hockey team will begin the regular season with back-to-back home games against Clarkson on Friday, Sept. 29 and Saturday, Sept. 30. Other notable matchups include a home-and-home series against Boston University on Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct.7, as well as an eight- game stretch—from Wednesday, Oct. 25 to Sunday, Nov. 19—in which the Huskies will play Hockey East opponents exclusively.

The start of the 2017-18 season for the men’s and women’s basketball teams is right around the corner. Both teams will begin at Boston University on Friday, Nov. 10. After their home opener on Sunday, Nov. 12 against Wentworth, the men will travel to Stanford, California, for the start of the PK80 Invitational, a four-game, 16-team extravaganza in honor of Nike co-founder Phil Knight’s 80th birthday. The women, for their part, will return to the Cabot Center for a three-game home stand against Providence (Nov.14), Fairfield (Nov.17), and Marist (Nov. 19), before hitting the road for a two-game tournament at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst beginning on Friday, Nov. 24.
