An examination of the 2016 presidential election, a film festival on sustainability, and playoff hockey are just some of March’s must-see campus events.

Berkshires cooking

Xhibition Kitchen’s next cooking demo and cookbook signing will take place on Wednesday, March 2, from noon to 1 p.m. and feature Jane Barton Griffith, author of The Berkshires Cookbook.

This cookbook includes 60 recipes from western Massachusetts, a food hub and a hotbed for the the sustainable food movement.

Xhibition Kitchen is located in Stetson West.

Electing the next president

With the 2016 presidential election fast approaching, two Northeastern political science professors will give a lecture on the ins and outs of electing a president, from the primaries to the party conventions.

Professor William Mayer and assistant professor Nicholas Beauchamp will discuss this election cycle on Wednesday, March 2, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in 909 Renaissance Park.

Law symposium

The School of Law will look at elections from a legal standpoint when it hosts the 2016 Northeastern Law Journal Symposium on Friday, March 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Discussions throughout the day will focus on a range of topics, including redistricting, voter identification laws, and the Citizens United decision.

Sustainability Film Series

Northeastern will host its eighth annual Sustainability Film Series throughout the month, screening five films in 440 Curry Student Center that examine media, energy, water, and agriculture.

The first film—Merchants of Doubt, a documentary that looks at pundits-for-hire who present themselves as scientific authorities as they speak about topics like toxic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and climate change—will be screened on Monday, March, 14, from noon to 2 p.m. The film series is open to all. Global summit

The third annual Northeastern University Global Summit will take place on Saturday, March 19, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Ballroom. The student-run symposium—titled “The App Bubble: Technology and entrepreneurship”—will explore the complexities of entrepreneurship in an age in which apps dominate a large portion of the technological market.

Theatre production

The theatre department’s next production, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, will open on Tuesday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Studio Theatre in Ell Hall and run through April 3. The musical tells the story of six students vying for a spelling bee championship. Tickets are available on myNEU or at the Ell Hall box office.

Beneath the Waves

Beneath the Waves, a nonprofit dedicated to conducting conservation-​​based research, will host a film festival on Thursday, March 31, from 7 to 9 p.m. in 201 Mugar. The organization, which uses film festivals as a vessel to promote ocean discovery, education, and conservation, was founded by Austin Gallagher, MS’10.

The films that will be screened examine two categories of marine issues: anthropogenic impacts and marine science research.

Popcorn and lemonade will be served. The event is free and open to the public.

The Future of…Journalism

Join President Joseph E. Aoun on Thursday, March 31, for the third installment of  “The Future of…,” the new presidential speaker series. Aoun will have a conversation with Washington Post executive editor Martin Baron. Baron also was editor of The Boston Globe from 2001 to 2012, during which the paper won a Pulitzer Prize for its investigative reporting on the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal. The Globe’s work to break that story was the subject of this year’s Oscar-winning movie Spotlight.

Athletics

It’s playoff time for Northeastern athletics.

The men’s hockey team will host Maine this weekend in a best-of-three Hockey East tournament quarterfinal. The first game is on Friday, March 4, at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena. Student tickets can be reserved on myNEU. For general ticket information, visit GoNU.com.

The men’s basketball team will tip off its run in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament against Towson at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, in Baltimore, Maryland. The game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet.

The women’s hockey team will battle Boston University in the semifinals of the Women’s Hockey East tournament on Saturday, March 5, at 4:30 p.m. at Merrimack College.

The women’s basketball team will wrap up its regular season on Wednesday, March 2, when it welcomes Hofstra to the Cabot Center at 7 p.m.

The baseball team will open its home schedule against Buffalo on Friday, March 18, at 3 p.m. at Friedman Diamond.
