Last fall Maddi Manos attended On Fire To Hire, a startup expo held on campus, in search of the perfect match to round out her Northeastern co-op experiences. Her first two co-ops were at TJX and Amazon, but she was looking to join a startup with an eye toward trying something different and acquiring a new set of skills.

“I was coming from co-ops at two large companies, and a startup is a big pivot,” said Manos, DMSB’17, a fourth-year business major with a concentration in finance and entrepreneurship. “But I wanted to work at a startup, at a place where I had the opportunity to learn a lot and grow.”

One of the startups on her list was Antera Therapeutics, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotechnology company that develops therapies for the prevention of peanut allergy development in infants. She networked with the company’s  representatives at the expo and immediately felt it would be a great fit. She left her resumé, followed up with the company soon after via email, and ultimately landed a co-op position there starting in January.

On Monday night, the fourth-year student will return to the latest On Fire To Hire expo. But this time she’ll be there in an official capacity, working as a representative for Antera and looking to meet prospective hires for co-op and internship positions.

On Fire To Hire will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Ballroom and Indoor Quad. More than 50 startups (here’s a listing of those participating) will be represented at Monday night’s event, which is expected to draw hundreds of jobseekers looking for co-ops for the fall 2016 co-op cycle, internships, or full-time positions.

The expo is open only to Northeastern students and alumni, and NU IDs are required. Registration begins at 5 p.m.

“Startups expos are really interesting places to learn about new companies that are out there and up-and-coming,” Manos said. “There’s a strong cross-section of a lot of different co-op opportunities.”

For her part, Manos said she’s loving her role at Antera. Her responsibilities include working on the operations side of the business, marketing efforts to both parents and physicians, and serving as an account manager. Next week, she’ll head to Los Angeles, where she and her colleagues will represent the company at the 2016 annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

“My position is everything,” she said.

Manos’ advice to students and alumni attending Monday night’s On Fire To Hire Startup Expo: Take a deep breath, do some pre-event research on a few companies you want to network with, and make good first impressions.
