October’s can’t-miss campus events

From cooking demos to Parent and Family Weekend, this month is stocked with fun activities and opportunities to enjoy the crisp autumn weather.

On Fire to Hire Startup Expo

This semi-annual event, sponsored by the Center for Entrepreneurship and Education, gives students the chance to network with startup companies looking to hire interns, co-ops, and full-time employees.

Held in the Curry Student Center Ballroom and Indoor Quad, this event will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All Northeastern students and alumni are invited. Business casual dress is suggested.

Health Sciences Entrepreneurs 10th Anniversary Celebration

This mentoring program, which connects experienced entrepreneurs with alumni, students, and faculty looking to launch health sciences ventures, will celebrate its 10-year anniversary on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on the 17th floor of East Village. Registration closes Friday, Oct. 2.

Bouvé Health Fair and Flu Shot Clinic

Get your free flu shot at this annual event on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Ballroom. There will also be health screenings, an opportunity to donate blood, and giveaways.

Parent and Family Weekend

Parents and families will descend upon campus the weekend of Oct. 16-18 to experience Northeastern.

In addition to college receptions on Oct. 16 starting at 4 p.m., and various sporting events throughout the weekend, parents and families will also get the chance to hear from a Northeastern faculty member at the heart of the university’s academic experience. This faculty spotlight is at 2 p.m. on Oct. 16.

President Joseph E. Aoun will welcome everyone to campus on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m., and there will also be a family barbecue from noon to 2 p.m. that same day.

2015 John Coltrane Memorial Concert

In collaboration with the Northeastern Center for the Arts, the 38th annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert will take place Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Blackman Auditorium. It will include a performance by the John Coltrane Memorial Ensemble.

State of the University

The Northeastern community is invited to Solomon Court in the Cabot Center on Wednesday, Oct. 28, for the annual State of the University program, which highlights the university’s recent accomplishments and plans for the future. Doors will open at 11:45 a.m. and lunch will be provided to attendees.

Xhibition Kitchen

Northeastern’s own version of a “Food Network” set will host some fun culinary demonstrations this month.

Xhibition Kitchen veterans Marilynn and Shelia Brass will showcase recipes from their new book Baking with the Brass Sisters on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at noon. Stacy Cogswell, a contestant on season 12 of Top Chef and author of The New New England Cookbook, will be at Xhibition Kitchen on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at noon.

Sally McKenney, creator and author of Sally’s Baking Addiction, will serve up some sweet treats on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at noon.

Athletics

There are plenty of opportunities this month to see the Huskies in action. Here are some games to put on your calendar:

•    Women’s soccer vs. UNC Wilmington on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. at Parsons Field

•    The men’s hockey team’s season opener, on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. at Matthews Arena against Colgate

•    The women’s hockey team’s first home game of the season, on Friday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena against Syracuse

•    Men’s and women’s rowing, competing at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 17 and Oct. 18
