Everything you need to know about on-campus move-in by Jason Kornwitz August 27, 2015 Share Facebook LinkedIn Twitter August 29, 2014 – Jake Pratt, left, S’15 (expected graduation December ’14), pulled his brother, Max, through West Village as students moved in to their dormitories at the start of the school year. Some 9,100 Northeastern students will reside in on-campus housing this fall, the vast majority of whom will be moving in over the next week. To help ease the stress of the big day, we talked with Chong Kim-Wong, chair of the fall move-in committee, and then compiled this list of tips, recommendations, and useful links. Bring this, not that Northeastern provides you with the basics—a bed, a chair, a desk, a dresser, and a window shade—but you’ll need to bring the essentials, like pillows, towels, and toiletries. If you forgot to pack something, simply take one of the Welcome Week trips to Target, Best Buy, or Bed Bath & Beyond and pick up what you left at home. For a list of prohibited items, see page 16 in Northeastern’s guide to residence hall living. Seek help from professional movers, Facilities staff, and student volunteers Northeastern hired an outside company to plan the move-in process, with a particular focus on alleviating traffic. If you’re moving into East Village or International Village, the company’s movers will unload your car, deliver your bins to your room, and then help you unpack. On the university’s official move-in days—Aug. 31 and Sept. 3-6—a different moving company will help you unload your car and then place your belongings into bins. Facilities staff will help you move your bins into your residence hall, while student volunteers will be available to answer your move-in questions. Don’t worry about losing your room key—you won’t be getting one As of this fall, all university-owned residence halls will utilize online, wireless locks, allowing you to open your door using your Husky Card or your smartphone. There are three ways to open your door using your phone, all of which can be found here. In short, you can download the CBORD Mobile ID app; text “open mydoor” to 67513; or utilize the “OpenMyDoor” mobile feature on the myNEU web portal. File a work request If something in your room is broken or isn’t working, file a work request with Facilities, which provides 24-hour support through the use of a computerized work order system. Log in to your myNEU account and then go to the “Community” tab. Under “Helpful Links,” select “Facilities Online Work Request.” Hash out your roommate problems If you and your roommate are not getting along, seek guidance from your resident assistant or resident director. Your resident director will facilitate a dialogue between you and your roommate and might even draft up a roommate contract aimed at preventing future conflict. If that does not solve the problem, you can file a room change request beginning on Sept. 14.
