Speare was the university’s founding president, shepherding its growth out of a night school at the Huntington Avenue YMCA in Boston. He oversaw the founding of the law school and the beginnings of the co-op program; he also brought on the school’s first “King Husky” dog mascot, who lived with him briefly.
