The award, given by the only statewide legal news publication, celebrates outstanding female lawyers across Massachusetts who have demonstrated excellence in the legal profession and leadership in their communities.
Jamie Weiler, an associate general counsel at Northeastern University, has been recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly in its 2024 listing of the top women of law.
The award, given annually by the only statewide legal news publication, celebrates outstanding female lawyers across Massachusetts who have demonstrated excellence in the legal profession and leadership in their communities.
Weiler, who supports Northeastern’s compliance with state and federal laws related to employment, student affairs, non-discrimination and other civil rights, expressed gratitude for the recognition.
“There are a lot of really impressive women honored by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly this year,” Weiler says. “It’s humbling and I am grateful to be recognized among them.”
Weiler is a vital part of the university’s legal team. She has also taken on additional duties, including serving on Northeastern’s COVID-19 task force.
During and after the pandemic, Weiler drafted communications related to new protocols, provided guidance for managers and helped write policies for visitors to campus.
Mary Strother, senior vice president and general counsel at Northeastern, says Weiler exhibits the best qualities in a lawyer.
“She is extremely knowledgeable, unflappable in stressful situations, always poised and humble, and brings a sense of humor to every challenge,” Strother says.
Lisa Sinclair, vice president of legal affairs and deputy general counsel at Northeastern, says Weiler is committed to the university, her colleagues and the community.
“Jamie’s dedication to excellence in higher education law, her thoughtful, compassionate and practical approach to resolving complex legal issues are just a few reasons why Jamie is so deserving of the award,” Sinclair says.
Weiler has always been interested in working in higher education, she says. Her father spent his career working in higher ed advancement, and his passion and commitment had a lasting impact on Weiler.
“It made me want to work in a similar environment and contribute to an institution in similar ways,” she says. “In pursuing that path, I realized that I could work in the higher education space, but maybe in a different way than my dad did and still contribute meaningfully to an institution that makes an impact on a lot of people and helps educate the next generation.”
In addition to her legal duties, Weiler also mentors recent Northeastern School of Law graduates who participate in fellowships in the Office of the General Counsel.
“I help support their day-to-day work and prepare for their job search once they complete the fellowship,” she says. “It’s been professionally enriching for me to be able to support new attorneys as they launch their careers and go on to doing great things in the profession.”
Outside the university, Weiler volunteers as a mentor with the Discovering Justice program, which educates students from elementary through high school about civics and the legal system.
“It’s really rewarding to support an institution that has a mission like Northeastern,” she says. “Northeastern is really making an impact locally and globally.”
