Friday was a record day for Northeastern University men’s ice hockey with six future Huskies and one current player selected in the NHL Draft.

The seven picks are the most in program history, surpassing the five Huskies taken in 1985. Northeastern also had more current or committed players drafted this year than any NCAA team. Minnesota was next with five.

“This draft is evidence of the continued upward trajectory of the Northeastern men’s ice hockey program,” athletic director Jim Madigan said. “Northeastern has transformed itself into one of the top player development programs in college hockey, and credit to head coach Jerry Keefe and his staff for identifying players who view Northeastern as the place to take their game and education to the next level.”

Cam Lund, a center who will be a freshman at Northeastern in the fall, was picked in the second round, 34rd overall, by the San Jose Sharks.  A few minutes later, center Jack Hughes, the youngest player in Division 1 hockey last season at 18, was taken by the Los Angeles Kings with the 51st pick.

Two more future Huskies were selected in the next two rounds. Defenseman Michael Fisher was picked in third round, 76th overall, by the Sharks, while goalie Cam Whitehead was taken in the fourth round, 128th overall, by the Vegas Golden Knights.

In the sixth round, future Huskies Hunter McDonald (165th) and Jackson Dorrington (176th) were taken by the Philadelphia Flyers and Vancouver Canucks. In the seventh round, James Fisher was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Lund, who is from Bridgewater, Massachusetts, had 50 points in 62 games for the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League last season. The 6-foot-2, 192-pound forward played his prep school hockey at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.

Hughes, a  6-foot, 165-pound forward from Westwood, Massachusetts, had seven goals and 16 points while playing in all of Northeastern’s 39 games in 2021-22.

Fisher, a 6-2, 198-pound blueliner from Westborough, Massachusetts, played prep hockey last season for nearby St. Mark’s School. Whitehead, a 6-3, 170-pound goalie from Ontario, played in the USHL for Lincoln.

McDonald, Dorrington and James Fisher are all defensemen.

McDonald (6-4, 207 pounds) is from Fairport, New York, and played in the USHL for Chicago. Dorrington (6-2, 192) is from North Reading, Massachusetts, and played in the USHL for Des Moines after Cushing Academy. And Fisher (6-2, 188) is from Wilmington, Massachusetts, and played high school hockey at Belmont Hill.

Hughes’ brother and Northeastern teammate, Riley Hughes, was a seventh-round pick by the New York Rangers in 2018. Hughes father, Kent Hughes, is the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens.
