September meant a very welcome “fully present” start to the academic year, a new normal just as exciting and enriching as the old one. Matriculation has been in full force as students enjoyed the late summer and early fall weather. Northeastern President Joseph E. Aoun led the annual convocation for incoming freshmen while doctoral students and master’s degree students at D’Amore-McKim celebrated receiving their degrees. The university marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a ceremony that included remembering Candace Lee Williams, a student who died in the attack. The university’s annual Civic Experience series featured former Obama White House deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes; and a new eatery launched on Columbus Avenue. With 7.9 billion people worldwide, some 5.57 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered globally. But in low-income countries, only 1.9% of the population has received even one dose. At the root of that vaccine inequity, say Northeastern experts, is an issue of who is calling the metaphorical shots and why.
