At the midway point in his sophomore season, the former Northeastern Husky is among the leaders in many Major League Baseball pitching categories.

Cam Schlittler, a former Northeastern University Husky who has dominated Major League Baseball hitters this season with a devastating trio of fastballs, displayed a cool indifference over the weekend when asked about his debut appearance at the upcoming All-Star Game.

“It’s a great feeling,” the 25-year-old right-handed pitcher in his second MLB season told beat reporters inside the New York Yankees dugout. “The goal is obviously to start it.”

Schlittler was invited to participate in the July 14 game 一 an annual showcase of outstanding talent from across baseball 一 as one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball, according to the statistics. At the midway point in his sophomore season, he is among the leaders in many statistical categories viewed by analysts as the most critical metrics of success.

The native of Walpole, Massachusetts, who pitched for Northeastern from 2020 to 2022, boasts the lowest Earned Run Average (ERA) in the American League.

Schlittler has recorded a 2.05 ERA in his 20 starts in 2026, earning him a 9-5 win/loss record and a WAR of 4.1, according to Baseball Reference, a leading statistical resource. He also has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.48, collecting a total of 137 strikeouts.

Even before his official addition to the All-Star roster, much of the baseball world had already crowned him as a shoo-in to pitch the game’s honorable first inning.

“He is at the top, or near the top, in so many different categories,” Mike Glavine, head coach of the Northeastern Huskies, told Northeastern Global News. “I think it’s all right there for him.”

But with his six and two-thirds innings pitched in his regular start for the Yankees on Saturday, July 11, just three days before the All-Star Game, the lack of adequate rest between appearances means Schlittler likely will not be pitching Tuesday night. However, he is on the roster and will be available.

“If I need to throw, I’ll throw. I’m just going to show up there and prepare the way I usually prepare, and we are going to see how it goes from there,” Schlittler told members of the media over the weekend.

Still, Northeastern coaches who mentored Schlittler during his successful college career said his invitation to the All-Star Game is reason enough to be exceedingly proud. As a Husky, Schlittler went 14-9 with a 2.62 ERA and 180 strikeouts over 182 innings in 31 appearances, 30 of them starts.

“Super proud of what he’s done, how hard he’s worked to get where he is,” said Kevin Cobb, Northeastern Huskies associate head coach and pitching coach. “I think there’s a lot of numbers you can put out there to support how good he is, metrically speaking, but I think that Cam’s always been a really, really good competitor.”

Glavine said he has only missed one of Schlittler’s 34 Major League starts since his rookie 2025 season, which he regretted having to watch a replay of after the fact.

“It’s really a sense of pride. Just to watch him pitch, watch him work, see how far he’s come from seeing him in high school, to watching him pitch for us, to now,” Glavine told NGN. “To see his growth, physically, mentally, and his confidence on the mound, it’s so fun.”
