Free your mind with Northeastern’s no-cost daily lunch break meditation sessions

If you are looking to start meditation or enhance an existing practice, check out the daily sessions offered free to faculty, students and staff on Northeastern’s Boston campus.
Specially trained mindfulness fellows, known as “mellows,” lead sessions from 12-12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday during the spring and fall semesters at the Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service in 200 Ell Hall.
The sessions do not require registration or special equipment, but participants are encouraged to wear clothing that allows them to feel comfortable sitting on the floor or lying down, said Sagar Rajpal, associate director of Northeastern Spiritual Life.
The center provides all the accoutrements meditators may need, from mats and pillows to benches and meditation chairs in a softly illuminated, warm room known as the Sacred Space.
The mellows leading meditation are a mix of students, faculty and staff, many of whom were trained by Aaron B. Daniels, an associate teaching professor in the psychology department who guides one meditation session a week, usually on Tuesdays.
“We make sure there is a certain level of diversity in the practices that we offer,” Rajpal said. “Each mellow offers a different practice every day,” including breathwork, body scans and loving kindness meditations.
The goal is “to build a relationship with the mind and self overall and a sense of acceptance and peace within yourself,” said Evan Kenny, a military veteran and fourth-year student who leads Monday sessions.
In a busy world full of distractions, “Meditation is one of the easier, more approachable ways of practicing mindfulness,” Rajpal said.
