One place to visit in London

Bex Morrison at Northeastern’s London campus recommends Borough Market, which is across the River Thames and 20 minutes from the London campus on foot.

Bex Morrison is all over Northeastern University’s London campus. As associate vice president of academic affairs and student engagement, she oversees six teams dedicated to different aspects of the student experience, from class registration to housing.

Born in Wimbledon (“not far from the tennis”), she’s worked at the Devon House location since 2016, so the neighborhood is like home. The Tower of London is a short walk away, as are the waterfront restaurants of St Katharine Docks.

Her favorite stop, however, is Borough Market, across the River Thames and about 20 minutes from the London campus on foot.

“You can walk over Tower Bridge, and it’s at the base of London Bridge on the South Bank,” Morrison says. “It’s full of restaurants, bars and food stalls. There’s a French Quarter where I can go in and get my cheese and my butter and my sausages, all the naughty things that I shouldn’t be eating.”

Borough is one of the city’s largest and oldest food markets, with operations dating to at least the 12th century. It’s also a can’t-miss stop during the Christmas season, with lights and ornaments decorating the market’s overhead arches, buskers singing carols, and seasonal treats from across the globe. A holiday highlight is the annual Evening of Cheese (Dec. 11), where shoppers can get advice from local cheesemongers and taste samples from around Europe. If cheese isn’t your thing, there’s plenty on offer besides, from substantial street snacks (including paella!) up to full sit-down restaurants.

“You can eat, chill and kind of just watch the world go by,” Morrison says.
