The official recognition of Pride Month by the U.S. government happened in 1999, when President Bill Clinton declared June as “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.”
Pride Month will be celebrated in June across Northeastern University’s 13 global campuses.
Pride Month originated from the Stonewall Uprising that took place 55 years ago in New York City. The rebellion began on June 28 after police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar, and began brutally arresting patrons. The protests lasted six days and sometimes involved thousands of people.
The next year, the community gathered for the first Christopher Street Gay Liberation Day march. The official recognition of Pride Month by the U.S. government happened in 1999, when President Bill Clinton declared June as “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.”
