We have scoured Northeastern’s yearbooks from the past 100 years in order to show you the progress of athletics through the times. Basketball E-sports Baseball Track & Field/X-Country Swimming Rowing Volleyball Soccer Hockey Field Hockey 1920’s In the 1920’s (and many decades after), sports were exclusively for men. Coaches wore suits (at least in photos) and knee pads as well as other protective gear looked quite different from today. Northeastern University got its first mascot, Husky the First, in 1927. Rah, Rah, Rah; Northeastern! 1930’s Cheerleading throughout most of the first half of the century was led by men and instead of doing gymnastics they stuck to engaging the audience in popular chants such as “Northeastern! Rah rah rah; Northeastern!”. Soldiers coming back from the war were in fact allowed to finish their degrees in only two and a half years since they had already lost so much of their youth.
