“I was angry, but I also wanted to harness my education to make a positive impact on the community,” says Akingbade, who moved to Ferguson, Missouri, for five weeks last spring for an independent research fellowship. “I wanted to know what African American people were thinking about race, protest, and the police. Far too often, this story is told through the eyes of white Americans.”
