Fear no February famine with fresh Fenway fruits (and veggies!)

When life hands you the winter blues, get blueberries.

And also be sure to grab local apples, lettuce and organic spinach, plus fresh Florida-grown fruit like bananas, strawberries and raspberries. They’re available every Wednesday in the Curry Student Center, where an indoor farmers market is open from noon to 6 p.m.

In fact, sustainability manager Carol Rosskam called the spinach “the best and sweetest I’ve had in years!”

The offerings come from Marshall’s Fenway Farm Stand, a local business located across the Fens on Boylston Street, just a few blocks from the famed Fenway Park. The healthy, organic offerings arrive fresh daily from farms — many of them right here in Massachusetts — that don’t stop growing just because the temperature drops.

For two decades, the stand’s owner, Bob Marshall, has been buying from local farms and distributers, seeking only fresh produce of high enough quality “that I’d take it home myself,” Marshall says.

When shopping for Northeastern students, he keeps an eye out for fresh foods that won’t quickly spoil. Marshall says if he doesn’t have a product students are looking for one week, he’ll try to find it — or something similar — the next week.

The most popular item this winter has been fresh, sweet strawberries from Florida. “I can’t bring enough,” Marshall said. “I pile them up and they’re gone like that.”

The market will be open every week until this spring, when the wildly popular outdoor farmers market returns to Centennial Common for a second season.

The indoor farm stand is located on the ground floor of Curry, between the bookstore and the information desk. Cash is the only method of payment accepted.
