This week, Northeastern welcomes to campus the 113th entering class. In addition to the 2,800 freshmen and 550 transfers, the diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students comes from around the globe. Many of them will work on co-op, conduct research and study abroad across seven continents before they graduate as part of the numerous experiential learning opportunities available to them.

President Joseph E. Aoun has made global expansion of co-op and other forms of experiential learning a centerpiece of his agenda. While the number of Northeastern students participating in international co-op has tripled over the last four years, the campus has become an increasingly international community as well.

This fall, the International Student and Scholar Institute (ISSI) has greeted one of the largest groups of international students to date. In fact, 11 percent of the 113th class is comprised of international students from 84 countries and 1,735 high schools around the world.

“It is a very exciting time in the history of the university, as we continue to see the strength of our international community grow on campus,” said Ronne Patrick Turner, associate vice president of enrollment and dean of admissions. “Northeastern celebrates different cultures, customs, and ethnicities as is made evident through our diverse and worldly student body. Under President Aoun’s leadership we have become a global university.”

The incoming class of freshmen also marks one of Northeastern’s most accomplished. The new class includes approximately 85 National Merit and National Achievement scholars; half graduated within the top 10 percent of their high school class. The mean score on the two-part SAT was 1308, up 78 points since 2006, and the middle 50 percent hada high school GPA between 3.5and 4.1.
