Event is Part of Week Long Inauguration Celebration

(3-15-07) BOSTON, Mass. – Could nanoparticles one day be used to enhance spinal cord regeneration? What are the culinary connections between Africa and the American South? How can the United States’ nanotechnology policies potentially affect the Global Poor? Are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender teens more likely to use drugs and alcohol? Are poverty and violence family traditions? How do African-American adolescent girls talk about sex with their mothers? Can a computer generated health coach encourage elders to take their medications and exercise?

These are just a few of the topics being explored at Northeastern University’s 2007 Research & Scholarship Expo on Wednesday March 28th from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in Matthews Arena (238 Saint Botolph St Boston). The event showcases faculty, graduate and undergraduate research across all disciplines including physical and life sciences, engineering, humanities, arts, health sciences, law, business and social sciences. This year’s expo will include 215 presentations, an increase from last year’s 175. Presenters include 68 faculty members, 99 graduate students and 51 undergraduate students. Three awards will be given for outstanding student presentations.

“The Research and Scholarship Expo is an annual celebration of the intellectual and creative achievements of Northeastern University’s faculty, graduate and undergraduate students,” said Srinivas Sridhar, Vice Provost for Research at Northeastern University. “Since its inception in 1999, the Expo has grown dramatically in size and visibility, a reflection of the flourishing research and scholarship activities on campus.”

In 2006, Northeastern University reported $73M in research expenditures, more than a three –fold increase over the last decade. The growth and importance of the Expo has paralleled the expansion of the research enterprise.
