New campus center aims to foster a community of inclusivity

Northeastern has launched the Center for Intercultural Engagement, which will provide a range of programming and resources that bring together students, faculty, and staff for discussions around topics such as diversity and identity.

May 6, 2016 - BOSTON, MA. - Northeastern University celebrated its 114th Commencement on May 6, 2016. President Joseph E. Aoun led the undergraduate ceremony, which was held at TD Garden in Boston. Secretary of State John Kerry delivered the Commencement address. Northeastern conferred honorary degrees upon a distinguished group of influential figures: Retired Maj. Gen. Charles Frank Bolden Jr., the administrator of NASA; Susan Hockfield, former president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and president-elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; and Thomas McCarthy, an award-winning director, screenwriter, and actor whose most recent film, Spotlight, won the 2016 Oscar for Best Picture. At the President’s Convocation on Tuesday morning, President Aoun, along with other university and student leaders, underscored the diversity of the incoming freshman class and pointed to the myriad opportunities—from global co-op, to cutting-edge research, to student organizations—that lie ahead.

President Aoun expresses ‘deep concerns’ about new NC law, speaks out in support of diversity and inclusion

President Aoun speaks out in support of diversity and inclusion

Following the passage of a controversial new law last week in North Carolina—where Northeastern maintains a regional campus—President Aoun issued a statement in strong support of diversity and inclusion. The law prevents local communities in that state from passing ordinances that protect the rights of gay, lesbian, and transgender people. “At Northeastern University we believe diversity is a strength to be celebrated, not a source of division,” Aoun said.
