California power outage
As winds pick up and the ground stays dry, Pacific Gas and Electric has announced another power shutoff in Northern California to prevent wires from sparking fires. But to put a stop to further damage, the key may be grids that don’t need shutting off: community networks of resources and democratic energy.
Pacific Gas and Electric, California’s largest utility, says it had to turn off power for hundreds of thousands of customers to reduce the risk of wildfires. Northeastern professor Daniel Aldrich, who co-directs the Master’s in Security and Resilience Studies program, says the company should have warned residents earlier and done more to prepare them for the blackout.
