This book, “Berkeley’s Doctrine of Signs,” co-edited by assistant professor of philosophy Peter West, investigates how the eighteenth-century philosopher George Berkeley approached the study of signs, in which one thing stands in for another, and how this understanding was crucial to Berkeley’s thinking. The collection of essays in this volume suggests that Berkeley’s doctrine of signs is a theme that runs throughout his writings, both philosophical and scientific.
