  • U.S. role in Middle East revamped as chaos engulfs Yemen

The Wall Street Journal - 03/26/2015

Since the Arab Spring uprisings, the U.S. has evacuated embassies in Yemen, Syria and Libya. Islamic State fighters and other extremist groups have increasingly taken advantage of instability in these countries and elsewhere. The group has claimed credit for a share of Yemen’s turmoil, and while its role there is not clear, the signals are ominous.

“The Yemen case highlights how the Islamic State threat is spreading into power vacuums from the Sinai to Libya to Nigeria to Afghanistan to Yemen,” said Max Abrahms, a professor at Northeastern University and terrorism expert.
