    The double disaster of a giant earthquake and tsunami today in Japan has caused a mercifully low death toll so far. That’s thanks in part to the country’s tradition of strong building codes and trying out new disaster-proofing systems. In years to come, those systems could make new buildings in Japan (and the United States) more disaster-resistant than ever before.
