    There are many reasons why addiction seemed to take off so easily, from poor access to mental health treatment to jobs leaving parts of the country to a growing sense of social isolation. Leo Beletsky, a professor of law and health sciences at Northeastern University, points to the fact that the US has seen rises in other deaths of despair, such as suicide and alcohol-related deaths, as proof that something deeper has gone wrong in American life.
