  • State Senate proposes public records overhaul

    The Boston Globe - 01/28/2016

Under the current law, agencies are supposed to comply with requests within 10 calendar days, though that provision is often ignored. A test by Northeastern University journalism students found 58 percent of cities and towns failed to meet the deadline for at least one of two requests it sent to every city and town in the state. And one-quarter of communities didn’t respond at all to one or both of the requests. Though the law theoretically allows the attorney general to prosecute officials for violating the law, no one can ever recall that ever actually happening.
