  • Northeastern launches new bioengineering department

    Northeastern University has created a new department of bioengineering within its College of Engineering school, the Boston-based university announced this week.

    The new department will fold in theEngineering School’s existing doctoral program in bioengineering and will develop new bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the field. Students also will be eligible for co-op opportunities.

    The department will further the research that’s already underway at Northeastern in tissue engineering, biodevices, biomechanics and nanotechnology in medicine and the environment, the university said. The projects could produce new drug delivery options along with new types of bandages that monitor the growth of bacteria and that help ligaments heal faster, and the like.

    Northeastern University Professor Lee Makowski is serving as the interim chairman of the department as the university begins a search this spring for a permanent chairperson.

    The university expects to begin enrolling bachelors and masters degree students in the program in fall 2015.
