  • NBC Olympic ratings slow out of the blocks

    Boston Herald - 08/08/2016

Dan Lebowitz of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University said viewership for the games in Brazil also might be taking a hit because people have more pressing concerns — the news for months has been full of reports of ongoing terrorist attacks, the contentious presidential election, Zika and Brexit.

“The Olympics are taking a backseat to a number of issues,” Lebowitz said. “Disenfranchisement has become heightened. The heightening has shown itself in a lot of ways: internationally, through a number of elements relative to terrorism; at home, longtime disenfranchised communities are feeling like their lives and rights don’t matter. This is happening in a world where the virtual news cycle is 24 hours now and coming at us so quickly.”
