  • France could invoke NATO attack clause

    Boston Herald - 11/17/2015

“The president of France has already come out and said this attack was a declaration of war and I can understand why, this is the biggest foreign massacre inflicted on France since World War II,” said Max Abrahms, a terror expert and professor at Northeastern University.

“I think it will be a very easy case to make to invoke Article 5,” Abrahms said of the NATO clause that states an attack on any one member is an attack on all.

“It may have been France doing the actual bombing in Syria after the attack, but they were using American intelligence to do it,” Abrahms said. “When it comes to counter-terrorism, generally, it is a global problem that requires a global solution — so whether or not Article 5 is invoked, there’s no question that there will be broad-based international support for a military response.”
