  • Experts: Belgium paying for lax security

    Boston Herald - 03/23/2016

Belgium — seen as a magnet for Islamic extremists who have operated under the radar there — needs to bolster its police tactics and intelligence operations, tighten up its notoriously complicated bureaucracy and secure its borders, experts said.

“Islamic states set up shop in Belgium because the country afforded them an opportunity to thrive,” said Northeastern University professor Max Abrahms. “The government allowed Islamists to take over neighborhoods there without any government intervention of any sort. … They basically had a very hands-off relationship with Islamists in their country. But now that position is unsustainable.”
