  • Editorial: Population study a call to action for our communities

    Gloucester Times - 04/16/2015

In two separate presentations last month, Northeastern University professor and noted regional economist Barry Bluestone addressed community and business leaders in both Rockport and Gloucester, outlining his Rockport findings and updating data for a Gloucester economic study.

In both cases, he cited a number of strengths in both communities.

There’s Rockport’s educated, albeit small, local workforce, as noted in Bluestone’s town Economic Development Self-Assessment Test, or EDSAT, report commissioned by the town’s Economic Develpoment Committee. There’s Gloucester’s recognition and marketing of its arts community, it’s advancements in harbor and waterfront flexibility. And then there are the shared advantages both communities have in transportation, thanks in large part to the MBTA commuter rail line — when it’s running effectively, of course.
