Maria Alonso’s story is inseparable from the city she’s always called home. A lifelong Miamian, she has spent her career investing in the community — leading organizations like United Way Miami and now serving as CEO and regional dean of Northeastern University’s Miami campus.

From shaping national Hispanic marketing strategies at Bank of America to forging new paths in higher education, Alonso’s work is rooted in a deep commitment to Miami’s people and progress.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise she finds it hard to recommend just one place to visit.

“Miami is a beautiful city with a vibrant culture, renowned beaches, a thriving food and art scene, and a community with entrepreneurship at its core,” she says. “I’d say Miami is as much a vibe as it is a multicultural community.”

That said, Alonso is especially partial to the city’s Wynwood neighborhood, home to Northeastern’s Miami campus.

“I would definitely start there,” she says.

Wynwood, she explains, is Miami’s creative and cultural hub — perfect for exploring on foot.

“Known for its colorful murals and street art, Wynwood is a walkable neighborhood with an eclectic mix of galleries, shops, food halls, and restaurants that make it a go-to spot for foodies,” Alonso says.

Her must-visit list includes Wynwood Walls and the Museum of Graffiti. After taking in the art, she suggests stopping at one of the area’s many lively eateries or coffee shops. Favorites include Zak the Baker, a kosher café known for its fresh-baked goods, and Panther Coffee, a local institution.

For dinner, Alonso recommends Doma, Pastis and Kyu — her top choices for a memorable night out.

Wynwood also caters to craft beer lovers. Alonso’s pick? Cervecería La Tropical, which has historic roots tied to Cuba’s oldest brewery.

And when you’re visiting Northeastern’s Miami campus, Alonso has one more insider tip: head to La Ferneteria, a rooftop restaurant with sweeping views of Wynwood and downtown Miami.
