May is National Bike Month, and the nonprofit Bikes Not Bombs will be on the Boston campus to help you get ready for a summer of cycling.

What is it?

Throughout May, Northeastern University is hosting a series of events on the Boston campus aimed at encouraging staffers to make biking part of their daily routines. On May 13, the local nonprofit Bikes Not Bombs will conduct free bike safety checks on Centennial Common between 8 and 9:30 a.m. The rain date is May 15.

How do I get it?

Just ride by Centennial Common in the morning for your bike check, along with free coffee and snacks. Bike checks take just a few minutes.

What else is going on for Bike Month?

If you’re interested in — but intimidated by — the idea of biking to work, the university’s engagement ambassadors are holding a Teams seminar covering the basics on May 14. The one-hour session will cover pointers on equipment, safety, navigation and ways to get involved in Boston’s biking community. In addition, Personify users can sign up for the university’s Bike Month Challenge; those who commute to work at least six times in May will be entered in a prize drawing. Just go to the platform’s Social tab and click on “Challenges” to join.

How bike-friendly is the Boston campus?

In addition to plenty of dedicated lanes and parking, the Boston campus has three self-service bike repair stations, which include tools for basic issues like loose chains and pumps for low tire pressure. They’re located at the Columbus Avenue  and Gainsborough parking garages and under the archway at West Village A.
