Northeastern is one win away from ending a 30-year Beanpot title drought.

The Huskies beat Boston College, 3-0, Monday night at TD Garden in the semifinal round of the cherished tournament, and will now face Boston University in the championship game next Monday night.

Northeastern’s top line carried the scoring with Dylan Sikura, Nolan Stevens, and Adam Gaudette netting a goal apiece, and freshman goalie Cayden Primeau delivered an outstanding performance, turning away 37 Boston College shots for the shutout. Head coach Jim Madigan credited the top line for its leadership, Primeau for giving the team confidence early on with his stellar play, and the entire team for quality shifts all night that helped Northeastern seize momentum when it needed it most.

“Obviously we’re excited with the win,” Madigan said. Noting that the players “played really well and hard,” he continued, “We had a game plan coming in, and they stuck to it.”

The Northeastern faithful started taking their seats an hour prior to puck drop, and the raucous crowd made its presence felt and heard early and often. Twice, the pep band played the team’s unofficial theme song, “Stacy’s Mom,” as the crowd sang along in delight, and the Northeastern fans chanted “Let’s go Huskies” with under two minutes left in the third period as the Northeastern victory crept closer.

Doug Coutts, CS’92, was there the last time Northeastern won the Beanpot in 1988, when he was a freshman. “I remember coming back to campus and everyone was so excited,” said Coutts. Having followed the team throughout the season, he felt good about its chances in this year’s Beanpot prior to the game.

Dan Ryan, a Double Husky and season ticket holder, has been coming to the Beanpot since 2004. Though he vividly remembers some of the heartbreaking Beanpot moments over the years—the 7-6 overtime loss to BC in 2011 came to mind—he’s taken the drought in stride and said the longer it’s gone, the more fun it’s been waiting for the next time the Huskies hoist the Beanpot trophy.

“We’ve been very exciting offensively this year,” said Ryan, E’00, MS’17. “If we can get by BC, I think we’ll be good.”

Monday night the Huskies did just that, and they’ve put themselves in great position to capture the Beanpot championship next week.
