With the Boston-area bracing for its first major snowstorm of 2018, Northeastern has canceled all classes at its Massachusetts campuses and closed administrative offices on Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard watch for eastern Massachusetts starting early Thursday morning. Heavy snowfall combined with high winds and coastal flooding are expected to create dangerous travel conditions. The university is closely monitoring the weather and will provide any additional updates to the campus community via email, social media, and the university homepage.

All updates and information can also be found at

“The safety of our community is our top priority,” the university said in a campus-wide message on Wednesday. “This decision will ensure that our facilities crews can manage the effects of the storm, maintain a safe campus, and prepare the campus to be fully operational on Friday.”

Online classes remain unaffected and will continue to be accessible to students. Northeastern’s campuses in Charlotte, North Carolina; Seattle; Silicon Valley; and Toronto will also remain open.

On the Boston campus:

  • The Stetson East dining hall will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., while all other dining locations will be closed.
  • The Curry Student Center will maintain normal hours of operation. Snell Library will also be open for study. Though most service points at the library will be closed, tech support and 24/7 research assistance via chat will be available through the library’s website.
  • The Marino Center will be open from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the Badger and Rosen SquashBusters Center will be closed. Up-to-date recreation facility hours, which may change due to the storm, can be found at or 617.373.4433.
  • Mandatory orientation for new students is postponed to Friday, Jan. 5, and parent/family orientation is canceled. Additional orientation information is available at
