There are some unique and thought-provoking events scheduled for this month at Northeastern, including the university’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and the international co-op fair.

Why comix? Drawing the world you want to see

This daylong event on Thursday, Jan. 14, will examine how race and identity is represented in comics. Presented by the Office of Institutional Diversity & Inclusion and the Northeastern Center for the Arts, the event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Ballroom.

It is being held in conjunction with the Gallery 360 exhibit “Visible Noize: The Art of John Jennings,” which will be on display from Jan. 9 to March 13.

Global experiences

Northeastern’s Global Experience Office is hosting two events on Thursday, Jan. 14, where students can learn more about available global experiential learning opportunities.

Representatives from various Dialogue of Civilizations programs will be at the Curry Student Center Indoor Quad from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to talk about their programs and answer any questions.

From 6 to 8 p.m. at the Indoor Quad, students who have completed global co-ops will be on-hand to share their experiences.

A Tribute to the Dream

Northeastern’s annual celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Curry Student Center Ballroom. Be on the lookout for more information as we get closer to the date.

Holocaust Commemoration

This annual event brings the Northeastern University community together to remember the Holocaust not only as a historical fact but also as a memorial to its victims. This year the event will include presentations by Gideon Klein Scholar Madelyn Stone as well as Jeffrey Burds, an associate professor of history.

The Gideon Klein Award supports a student exploring the work of a Jewish artist or musician who was persecuted by the Nazis. The scholar is asked to create an original work, prepare a performance, or do research. Stone’s presentation is titled “‘Reality is the satire’: The will to hope in the writings of Jura Soyfer.”

Burds’ presentation is titled “The pogrom in Lemberg, 1 July 1941: A local atrocity as international history.”

The commemoration will take place on Monday, Jan. 25, at 8 a.m. in the Raytheon Amphitheater. Breakfast will be served and RSVP is required.

NU Talk 2016

Inspired by the internationally renowned TED Talks, NU Talk 2016 will feature one student representative from each of Northeastern’s science-oriented student organizations, who will discuss research and studies related to their groups’ work.

This event will take place on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 6:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Amphitheater, and attendees are encouraged to RSVP on the event’s Facebook page.

Athletics

Northeastern’s winter sports teams will continue their 2015-16 campaigns during the month of January, and many of the contests will be against conference opponents.

Men’s basketball’s first home game of the new year is on Thursday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. against Colonial Athletic Association foe Delaware. The women’s basketball team will welcome CAA opponent William & Mary to the Cabot Center on Friday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m.

Men’s hockey will resume Hockey East play on Friday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. against New Hampshire. And women’s hockey will play host to the Huskies of Connecticut on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. Both of these games are at Matthews Arena.
